Hayneedle’s Helping Hands

Rebuilding Together 2We’re proud of the work we do to make a difference in the communities where we live and work- so we wanted to share a few of our recent efforts!  This spring the Hayneedle team participated in Rebuilding Day, an event hosted by Rebuilding Together.  Rebuliding Day is intended to provide assistance to the elderly and those that are disabled in the local community by providing updates to their homes, which allows them to continue living in their homes for years to come.

Sr. Merchandise Manager, Jill, describes the experience as extremely fulfilling.  “The homeowner was gracious, thankful and appreciative of the help we were able to provide,” says Jill. “She wanted to live in her home for another 20 years and be part of her neighborhood for years to come.”  “We had more than 35 employees, their families, and friends participate,” says Jennifer of Marketing, “it was wonderful to see us all come together to make a difference in the community where we live and work.”

Sarah, a member of the buying team, was impressed to see employees showing off skills they don’t utilize in the workplace.  “We rallied together as a team and did everything that we could to leave the house looking much better than we found it.  I helped out by doing a little drywall work in one of the bedrooms, and some priming/painting.”

Lawn and garden Buyer, Cayden, extended the opportunity to help out to her suppliers and was able to donate a few planters for the house.  “It was so cool to see how excited, happy, and appreciative the home owner was when we were done,” says Cayden.

The efforts to give back continued last month as Hayneedle hosted a blood drive on site to assist with the ever growing need for donations to the American Red Cross.  Hayneedle had 40 registered donors and 37 successful units were collected.  The blood collected at the Hayneedle blood drive will soon be put to use in an area hospital.  Since each pint can help save as many as three patients, the work on this drive could help save up to 111 lives!

“I’m excited to work for a company that gives back to the community,” says Cayden.  According to Jill, “the common theme from fellow Hayneedle employees is what more can I do? Everyone, and I mean everyone, continuously was asking what else they could do, and no one hesitated to dive into the next project.”

Hayneedle Kids at Work

Take Your Child to Work 2014 2On Thursday, April 24th Hayneedle hosted 23 kids as part of the national “Bring Your Daughters and Sons to Work” day.  “It was a fantastic experience for me and my children,” says Tiffany of the Hayneedle Technology team.  “The kids were able to meet the Hayneedle leadership team and hear how each of them started out in their careers, as well as, what courses of study they still use in their current roles; something that really clicked with the kids!”

“My kids had such a blast!” said Amy of the Finance team.  “What they really enjoyed was getting shot at by tech with nerf guns while they were on the tour and the scavenger hunt on hayneedle.com.  They thought it was pretty cool to be able to search for all of the products and they got to learn a little about the company as well.”

The greatest takeaway according to Tiffany is “for my children to be able to see and feel what a professional workplace environment is and what a positive and exciting company Hayneedle is to work for. Each of them came away with a better understanding of not only my job but clearer understanding of how they want to focus themselves in their studies today so they can prepare for a bright future; the likes of which are possible at Hayneedle.”

Hayneedle Celebrates Cyber Shopping Season

Category: HR Blog, HR News | Author:

December has been a month of hard work and holiday celebration at Hayneedle!   We recognized Cyber Monday, the busiest day of the year, with t-shirts for all employees and pizza for lunch.  On December 3rd a special guest stopped at the office- Santa!  Families were invited to have their picture taken and each child was able to tell Santa what items made the top of their lists this year.  Cyber Monday 2 was celebrated on December 9th with Popcornpalooza.  Employees enjoyed three sweet and salty flavors of popcorn to satisfy afternoon snack cravings.  The following week, the annual Ugly Sweater contest was a big success.  Team members across the organization wore their ugliest holiday-themed sweaters but the top honor this year went to Editing Supervisor, John.  In keeping with the holiday spirit, employees also recognized that the holidays are a time for giving.  Hayneedlers participated in the Channel 94.1 diaper drive for the first time and raised over 5,300 diapers for The Lydia House, smashing our goal of 4,000.

Cheers to another fun, memorable holiday season and many more to come!

Healthy Habits at Hayneedle

Yoga 2

At 5:15 every Wednesday evening, you’ll find a group of Hayneedle’s most adventurous practicing sun salutations, warrior sequences, and more. From beginners to experienced yogis, all are welcome to participate in a yoga class led by one of Hayneedle’s own editors, Chelsea Grubbs. Writer by day, yoga instructor by night, our teacher shares her skills and passion with the rest of the Hayneedle team. What began as an offer for anyone interested has developed into a weekly get-together for a group of devoted practitioners. Laughter is a welcome staple as the students explore new ways to stretch and challenge both body and mind.

Yoga GroupThe yoga class is just one of the ways that the Hayneedle team is showing a growing interest in wellness. Earlier this year, Hayneedle announced the development of a new wellness program. The program kicked off in April with a wellness fair that included biometric screening and a health evaluation. In May, employees had the opportunity to learn about healthful summertime cooking during a lunch-and-learn session hosted by a Hy-Vee nutritionist, who shared healthful recipes and safe grilling tips. Hayneedle is also providing employees with an opportunity to eat green this summer by introducing a new Community Supported Agriculture program. Through CSA, members pre-pay for a season-long share and receive a bag of produce each week. It’s a wonderful way to experiment with different foods as well as ensure access to locally grown, organic produce.

The next phase of the wellness program is expected to launch this summer. By investing in the health of our employees, we foster an environment of positivity and fulfillment. We provide lots of options so that every team member may participate!

Eleven years ago today, founders Doug Nielsen, Julie Mahloch, and Mark Hasebroock established Hammocks.com. They set out to create the best place in the world to buy a hammock, bar none. Since that time, our company has grown to become the best place not only to buy a hammock, but to buy everything else imaginable for home. And we’re still growing.

We’ve gone from less than 10 employees to more than 500, and we’re now the 4th largest online home furnishings retailer.

And it should be noted that we can put down about 5,000 Dilly Bars every year. Documented.

We value fun, but we value future even more. We just crossed the 11-year milestone with the opening of our new fulfillment center in Riverside, California. This new facility has 300,000 square feet – this combined with our existing Ohio fulfillment center means the capacity to ship over 2 million units per year. All in all we’ve laid the groundwork for continuing to build the best place to shop, to work, and to call our home away from home.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town … and to Hayneedle!

Category: HR Blog, HR News | Author:

Last week, Hayneedle employees and their families had the opportunity to meet with a very special visitor – Santa! Every child was given time to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him what they want for Christmas this year. As an extra-special treat, families were also invited to have a picture taken with Santa. The line to see the jolly ol’ fella was filled with tons of toys for the kids to play with, and after the picture, everyone enjoyed frosted cookies and milk. Oh, what fun!

Hayneedle wishes you and your family a happy, memorable holiday season!

Halloween Activities Haunt Hayneedle

Category: HR Blog, HR News | Author:

Last month Hayneedle got into the Halloween spirit with costumes, contests and, of course, treats! There were several impressive costumes, but the winners for the individual costume contest included the Joker and Wilfred. The group prizes were awarded to the superheroes versus villains’ themed HR team and the Workforce brothers, Mario and Luigi. A new pet costume contest made its debut this year, in which employees dressed their furry friends in costumes and took pictures to be voted on Halloween day. This year’s winners included two dogs: one dressed as Clark Kent and the other transformed into a spider.

Other Halloween events included a mummy-wrapping contest, trick or treating at the Customer Care Center, and cookie decorating. Everyone was also invited to help themselves to hot apple cider throughout the day and treated to Halloween-decorated snack cakes in the afternoon.

Way to Bocce Things Up

Category: HR Blog, HR News | Author:

Because we like to play as hard as we work, we’re super focused when it comes to game time.  So when Hayneedle summer interns challenged the HR department to a double-elimination Bocce ball tournament, it was game on. The super sweet equipment came from our site bocceballsets.com  – natch – and the event took place at Dante’s, a local pizzeria. The teams – Bocce Balboa, New Kids on the Bocce, Bocce Chicka Bow Wow and Bocce Champions – rolled their way toward victory.

The winning team? New Kids on the Bocce. In addition to bragging rights, the New Kids won the grand prize of – wait for it, now – Hayneedle water bottles … which will one day be considered priceless, we’re pretty sure.
